Nursing Clinical Placements

Our nursing clinical placements can support urology nurses with an individualised education program to meet their learning goals. Our Urology Nurse Practitioners and Urology Nurse Specialists are experts in prostate cancer and urology nursing.

A nursing education package at the APC is tailored to the individual’s needs, and may include any of the following:

Hormone Therapy Clinic

Learn about side effects of ADT, how to administer an ADT injection, and best practice multidisciplinary prostate cancer survivorship care for patients on hormone therapy.

Sexual Function Clinic

Best practice penile rehabilitation pre and post radical prostatectomy, training in intracavernosal injection (ICI) and vacuum erection devices (VED), intimacy counselling for couples, including same sex couples.

Prostate Cancer Survivorship

Experience the nursing role in prostate cancer survivorship throughout the patient journey, from point of diagnosis through to palliative care. Our nurses coordinate the survivorship care for patients with prostate cancer, and facilitate referrals to survivorship services.

Prostatectomy Prehabilitation Seminar

Attend our prehab seminar for patients undergoing RARP, including contributions from nursing, pelvic floor physio, exercise physiology and psychology.

Urology Nursing Skills

Development of urology nursing skills such a trial of void, catheter care, catheter removal, teaching clean intermittent self catheterisation, continence care, prostate cancer care.

Urology Nursing Procedures

Learn skills in urology nursing procedures, including flexible cystoscopy, urodynamic studies, Botox instillation and other bladder instillations, voiding flow rates & post void residual assessment, transperineal prostate biopsy, percutaneous tibial nerve stimulation (PTNS).

ERAS Program for Radical Cystectomy

Learn from our nurse practitioner and exercise physiologist about best practice ERAS protocols for patients undergoing radical cystectomy.

Observation and interaction with our specialist medical and allied health team

Our medical specialists: urologists, radiation oncologists, medical oncologists, endocrinologists, prostate cancer GP.

Our allied health team: pelvic floor physiotherapists, exercise physiologists and clinical psychologists.

Advanced Prostate Cancer MDT

Attendance at our weekly Advanced Prostate Cancer MDT. Learn from hearing case presentations and discussions of management options for patients with advanced prostate cancer with our urologists, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, urology and prostate cancer nurses, radiologists, pathologists, nuclear medicine physicians, pelvic floor physios and exercise physiologists.

Australian Medical Robotics Academy (AMRA)

Observation at our robotic surgery training academy, where urologists and other specialties use robotic simulators and artificial anatomical models to perfect skills in robotic surgery. Have a play on our robotic simulators, learn anatomy via our huge anatomy digital table, and view surgeries via 3D simulation goggles.

Other Experiences

These can be tailored to the learning needs of the nurse, and may include: observation of various radiation treatment options for prostate cancer, mentoring by prostate cancer nurses in the hospital and private clinic settings, continence clinic observation, operating room access to observe a variety of urological surgical procedures with consultants including Robotic surgery, diagnostic imaging including MRI prostate.
