It's Time to Test

Your Health. Your Call. What you need to know about prostate cancer.

'It's Time to Test' is APC's mobile outreach program, aiming to promote awareness and access to prostate cancer testing for at-risk men. Our program has been running for over 10 years, spreading the word about the importance of getting tested for prostate cancer.

Taking charge of your health starts with one simple step

When found early, prostate cancer is very treatable. Talking to your GP about your risk, family history and whether PSA testing is right for you is the first step in looking after your health.

Taking the first step: a simple blood test

What is PSA testing?
The PSA test is a blood test that measures the level of Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) in your blood. A raised PSA level does not automatically mean prostate cancer. Other factors and diseases can raise your PSA level.

Your doctor will determine if additional investigations are required.

When should I have a PSA test?
The current guidelines recommend talking to your doctor about testing for prostate cancer:

  • For men over 50, PSA testing every two years.
  • For men with a family history of prostate cancer, carry the BRCA gene mutation or black African or Ashkenazi Jewish ancestry, PSA testing every two years from age 45.
  • If you are over 45 years old and interested to know about your prostate health and thinking about getting your PSA checked.
  • If you are aged over 70, then have a discussion with your doctor about whether you want to keep testing or want to stop testing.
